Into Thin Air…
May 15th, 2009 by Wil Robinson
I’m off trekking in the Himalayas until the last week in May.
Thanks to all my loyal readers (amazingly, Google Analytics shows that I actually do have some – other than my mother). I hope you’ll check back at the end of May for a new post.
I thought I’d provide some links to my favorite reads in the meantime.
Okay, I’m also a contributor here, but there is some good stuff, and I’m long overdue to plug it. There are separate sections and editors – Kim (the founder of the site) covers Progressive Living, The News Writer covers Politics (more on her later), CyberCelt covers the Environment, Michael Hinckley provides historical context and insight, Lori Hahn covers the GLBT issues, and I try to hit the international scene.
There are plenty of links to each editor’s individual site, but the Team-Zine is a good resource for a collection of progressive thought. Thanks to Kim for all her hard work keeping the site going.
This has become one of my favorites when I want an unadulterated view of the issues. The News Writer is superb – a journalist by day, an investigator by night, she is particularly well-versed on deconstructing the hypocrisy and stupidity in right-wing media talking points. She’s also the only blogger I have come across who can use the F-word with class.
Though I’ve never met him, I consider Brother Tim an old friend. As a fellow believer in the commonality of the three major monotheistic faiths, and with a background as a preacher, BT has a gift for addressing religion without division. If there is hope for religion in our world, Brother Tim and people who think like him represent the future.
Matt Eckel and MDC tend to be much more objective than most bloggers, but their facts are always just that – facts. If you’re looking for an academic debate that stays away from polarizing ideas, these are the guys to read (especially if you’re interested in nuclear proliferation or the Israeli-Palestinian issue). Get in on the ground floor, because – God willing – one day these guys will be the minds at the Washington think tanks that formulate US policy.
No idea how I found Bill Stankus, but his site is a nice break. He’ll tell it like it is, and can spar with the best of them, but also has some neat poetic pieces on pop culture, woodworking (very enlightening), art, photography, and anything else that takes his fancy (hence, “Miscellany”). In particular, take a look at Small Talk and Cool.
This is another gold mine for tidbits that you’ll never find in the mess that is the news. SB has a unique ability to dig up stories that get buried, ignored, or purposefully hidden. Her sense of wit and humor shines in her writing, and sarcasm is ever-present.
This is a collection of bloggers – a good source for daily updates and viewpoints on the news. It’s not always “Moderate,” though there is a good balance overall, and the international flavor and high-profile Guest Voices make it a great read.
Warning: Watch out for Holly in Cincinnati’s posts – they are always either pro-Israel apologist pieces with no sense of perspective or reality, or meaningless updates from the top of Google News. Otherwise, it’s a great site.
Hope you enjoy. I’ll post some photos from my trip when I return.

Fuckin’ A. Thanks for the plug Wil. I’m oh so jealous and can’t wait for the photos. Have a great time.
Thanks Will for the mention … I’m flattered to be mentioned with the others on your list. And trekking in the Himalayas sounds terrific, that’s something I definitely would love to do.
Happy Trails!
Found your site via Bill Stankus, whose blog I follow. I’m assuming you’ll not post while trekking unless the Himalayas are wi-fi.
Whoops. My penchant for the F-word got me moderated. But thanks much for the shout-out — got two today, pretty cool — and I am oh so jealous and can’t wait for the pics.
God bless you, Wil. Thanks for the mention. If only people would concentrate more on their commonality, rather than their differentiality, we could finally reach a peaceful harmonious existence.
